Leonard C. Ball & James H. Bell
Scholarship Fund
Each year CBTU awards two scholarships to high school
and college students in the names of two men who exemplified union activism and
a thirst for knowledge. The Leonard C. Ball and James H. Bell Scholarship Fund
was established to honor the late Leonard Ball, the first executive director of
CBTU and the top aide to AFSCME International Secretary Treasurer William Lucy,
and the late Jim Bell, president of the New York Chapter of the Coalition of
Black Trade Unionists and a major force in the city politics of New York City.
Application forms and more scholarship information are available from CBTU's national office. Write: CBTU Office, P.O. Box 66268, Washington, DC 20035-6268. The scholarship recipients are announced at CBTU's annual national convention in late May.
In addition, many CBTU chapters sponsor their own youth programs and student scholarship funds. Check the CBTU Chapter Directory on this site and contact your local CBTU affiliate for information about their student aid or youth initiatives.
