About CBTU

Leonard C. Ball & James H. Bell Scholarship Fund

Each year CBTU awards two scholarships to high school and college students in the names of two men who exemplified union activism and a thirst for knowledge. The Leonard C. Ball and James H. Bell Scholarship Fund was established to honor the late Leonard Ball, the first executive director of CBTU and the top aide to AFSCME International Secretary Treasurer William Lucy, and the late Jim Bell, president of the New York Chapter of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists and a major force in the city politics of New York City.

  • $1,000 Scholarship-Students, including CBTU members, who have or about to graduate from high school and have applied or have already been accepted by a college or university, are eligible for this scholarship. Among other requirements, applicants must submit a 500-word essay on "How the Union and/or the Labor Movement has Influenced Me."
