Greetings

It is my pleasure to issue the Official Conventional Call for the 37th International Convention of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists,
May 21-26, 2008 in St. Louis, Missouri. While the city has a lot to offer, we have a lot to do. I will get right to the point. This November will be the most important election cycle in our history.

I know that has been said many times, but I cannot emphasize how important November 4, 2008 will be. We have a chance to elect a governing body that cares about working families, insurance for all, an equitable tax base, and no more war for our children. These elections will be unprecedented in the scale and scope of the direction this country and its citizens will endure for many years to come. We must do our part in determining what path we take.

Last year’s theme was, “Lessons Learned, New Vision for the Future”. We all have learned our lessons about the actions and inactions of the last eight years. The new vision is ahead and we must make that a reality on November 4, 2008. This is the time to pull out all of the stops, call in all of your markers, get unregistered voters registered, knock on doors, place phone calls, take voters to the polls, educate the uneducated, and any other actions necessary to make this a successful election cycle. We cannot sit back and depend on others; we must be
engaged in our communities like never before.

So, having said that, we are having workshops, seminars, training, discussions and education on what we can and must do. The workshops are still being discussed, but they will address the points mentioned above. Now is the time to get invigorated if not so already.

This convention will have some of our old standards, but the emphasis will be turning out the vote on November 4, 2008. There will be the National Woman’s Conference, Sunday Worship service, Youth Conference, C.A.R.A.T. Conference, Retirees’ Conference, Awards Dinner and other functions.

Let me be clear about our mission once again. We will focus on the upcoming elections and be prepared when we leave this convention to better serve, get involved, and get our chapters and communities drawn in to this extremely important election cycle.

The schedule will be full, some training will be long, we may not do everything as in the past, but it will be an exciting convention you do not want to miss.

We are ready and hope you are to take on this challenge. See you in St. Louis!!!!

In Solidarity,

William Lucy
