Every 9 and 1/2 minutes someone is infected
with HIV/AIDS

The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists has partnered with the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the ACT! Against AIDS Leadership Initiative.

We conducted a workshop at last year’s National Women’s Conference on HIV/AIDS and we were invited to become a partner to provide more education and information to our members and their communities on HIV/AIDS.

Every 9 ½ minutes someone becomes infected with/AIDS  here in the United States.  HIV/AIDS is an epidemic in our urban communities and is affecting everyone.  Black women and are increasingly becoming infected and our youth represent one of the fastest growing groups being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.

We are answering the call to action and our commitment to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Black America.

CBTU Objectives for the ACT! Against AIDS Program

  1. Reduce HIV rates in Black America by 50 percent
  2. Increase the percentage of African Americans living with HIV/AIDS who know their status by 50percent.
  3. Increase the percentage of African Americans living with HIV who are in appropriate care and treatment by 50 percent.
  4. Reduce the AIDS stigma in Black Communities by 50 percent.

HIV/AIDS is not just a health issue but a human rights issue, an urban renewal issue and an economic justice issue.  If we are to have any chance of winning the battle of racial justice in America, black America must confront the AIDS epidemic.

CBTU will offer a series of regional conferences on HIV/AIDS.  The first conference was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 2, 2009 at the Prince of Peace Baptist Church Community Center.

The conferences will provide a frank discussion of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, workshops for different age groups, youth, young adults, mature adults and seniors as well as confidential testing and counseling.

At the national CBTU convention in Atlanta, Robert Bailey of the CDC spoke about our partnership and our programs, on Friday at the National Women’s Conference there was a workshop to discuss additional programs and activities for CBTU chapters and regions.
