- A
woman went to the Governor of Tennessee with a problem. "Governor,"
she said, "my husband is locked up in prison, and I'd you to get
him out."
"What's he in for?"
"For stealing a ham."
"I see," said the Governor. "And is he a good husband?"
"No, he's not. He hangs out with his friends, and he nearly scares
the life out of our kids whenever he drinks."
The Governor didn't understand. "Then why do you want him out of
prison?"
"Well, sir," the woman explained, "we're out of ham again."

- Challenges
to racial profiling increase
This form of police abuse has become a major civil rights and political
issue as victims of what is called DWB (driving while black or brown)
report widespread incidents. In Congress, Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) has
introduced the "Traffic Stops Statistics Study Act of 1999"
(HR 1443) in the House and Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) introduced
its equivalent, S 821, in the Senate. This bill would require police
departments to collect data to determine the extent racial profiling
is used as a basis for traffic stops. The horrific police attacks on
Amadou Diallo and Abner Louima in New York City stunned the nation and
showed the deadly consequences of engrained racial stereotypes. As attorney
Johnnie Cochran said at a conference earlier this year, "It's not
only driving while black: It's walking while black, it's living while
black, breathing while black." Contact your members of Congress
and tell them to support the Conyers bill. If you have been a victim
of racial profiling while driving, call the American Civil Liberties
Union toll-free hotline at 1-877-6-PROFILE.
