Solidarity

CBTU delegates once again affirmed CBTU’s legacy of standing with workers here and abroad fighting for justice and empowerment. Laborers International Union President Terence O’Sullivan delivered a fist-pounding speech on behalf of millions of immigrant workers who are exploited and victimized by outdated U.S. immigration laws. He said it’s a “solomn obligation of us to support immigration reform…the fight that will define us.” In a show of solidarity, CBTU delegates unanimously adopted a resolution supporting the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride in October, 2003, to focus public attention the injustices of current immigration polices and the need for a new policy that protects immigrant rights.

The delegates also heard a moving speech from Colombian worker Francisco Ruiz who described the violence and abuse suffered by union leaders and workers in Columbia. He said so far this year over 30 union leaders have been assassinated and others continue to face threats from the government. CBTU passed a resolution in support of Colombian trade unionists, who are seeking U.S. aid for development, peace and justice.
